Our Ministers

Duncan Martin is a Preacher with a passion for his people and with a vision to help them. Duncan obeyed the Gospel of Christ in 1981 under the ministry of Thaddeus Propps at the Dixie Church of Christ in North Little Rock, AR. Duncan and Valerie Maxwell dated in high school and when Duncan obeyed the Gospel he wanted a Christian wife and he knew Valerie was the one for him so they married April 8 1983.  They have been married for 36 years and together they have 3 daughters. Duncan desired to become an Elder in the Church but was told he was too young.

Notwithstanding, he always had a fervent desire to learn more about the Bible, and his gifts as a teacher were noticed by all of the members of the Church. Accordingly, when Robert L. James, a notable, national Preacher moved to Little Rock, Duncan went to study under his ministry at the Lewis Street Church of Christ from 1983-1987. While at Lewis Street Duncan excelled as a Teacher and a Preacher. Therefore, whenever Bro. James was out of town to preach Evangelistic meetings and Revivals, Duncan was always left to take charge of the Church and did the preaching and teaching for the adult class.

In 1987 Duncan and Valarie and family moved back to the Dixie Church to work under the ministry of Thomas Hartaway after Thaddeus Propps retired. In 1998, Duncan and Valerie went to Grand Street Church of Christ in Brinkley, AR where he worked to support the Minister, Eddie Gilmore, who was ill. At the request of the congregation, based on the recommendation of the Minister, Duncan became the full-time Preacher for the Grand Street Church, where he preached for the next 11 years.

Finally, in 2009, the Lord called Duncan back to North Little Rock, where he maintained his residence for all of the years he preached in Brinkley. Based on that Call from God, he started a new congregation, the North City Church of Christ in North Little Rock with just 8 members. The church ministry began in a store front property located at 1000 W. 37th Street, in North Little Rock, AR. This congregation continued to grow so much that the church outgrew the little store front property.

In 2011 the Church purchased a building from the Parview Christian Church at 9300 Geyer Springs Rd, Little Rock, AR, and have grown to over 175 membership under the leadership of Duncan Martin. Brother Martin’s love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his vision for Church, and his passion for taking care of the needs of his people and the needs of the community is the driving force for the 5-fold ministry of the Southside Church as is detailed in the Southside Church of Christ Vision document and the Southside Discipleship and Mission Expansion.

Under his leadership, the Southside Church will make a significant contribution towards fulfilling the Great Commission to various parts of the world, beginning in Southwest Little Rock community where the Church meets and works.

Our Statement of Faith

About God

We believe God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. His nature is holiness and love. He is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is all-powerful, all-knowing and everywhere. In Him we live and move and have our being. God eternally exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equals and are one God.

About Jesus

We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and he lived a sinless human life and offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on the cross. He was raised from the dead after three days and won the battle over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again to judge the world and bring all God’s people to heaven forever. He is our example to follow and imitate.

About the Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is an equal part of the trinity (with the Father and the Son of God) and is God’s power for creation and transformation. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit leads us. The Spirit also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He helps

us pray. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. Since his work is to create in us the character of God, we as Christians try to surrender to the Spirit’s control every day.

About the Human Race

We believe that human beings are amazing because God made us in His own image designed to be like him in character. Every person has the potential for good, and is created with a divine purpose. Unfortunately, all of us have a tendency for disobedience toward God called “sin.” This separates people from God and causes

many problems in life.

About Salvation

God desires salvation for all. He does not want anyone to be lost, but that all might be saved. The story of the Bible is one of God rescuing mankind from a fate worse than death. In short, it is God’s desire that everyone on earth accept his gift of salvation. Self-improvement or just doing good things can never cover or erase our sins – which is why Jesus came to earth. Only through obedient trust of what Jesus  has done on the cross can forgiveness be obtained. Jesus Christ is the one and only hope for salvation and life after death.

About the Church

The Church is the body of Christ and belongs to the Lord. Jesus is Lord and every Christian is a member of that body. It is not defined racially, socially, geographically, ethnically, or denominationally. There is only Christ’s body, and He alone adds those that He saves to the one body. The purpose of the Church is to glorify God through worship, serving others, providing a community of believers and seeking others who are lost in life.

About Baptism

Baptism into Christ is faith responding to the Good News of Jesus and is repeatedly commanded in the New Testament. We believe that when one faith in Jesus moves them to be baptized, it results in the remission of sin by washing one’s sins away, places them in Christ, and adds them to the Church. There is no instance in scripture of anyone being added to The Body of Christ without it. Baptism is a word that means immersion in water. For believers who understand that only the blood of Jesus can wash away sins, it is the seminal point where faith, a decision, and action come together to add someone to the Church. Our burial in water unites us with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ and declares that our sins have been forgiven and our new life has begun.

About Worship

We believe that worship is central to a relationship with God. Not only do we worship individually throughout the week one-on-one with God, but we also worship as a community of believers each Sunday. A continual worshipful mindset is one that will lead you to a completely new level in your walk with the Lord.

Each Sunday is a chance when we can spend time together worshiping as a full community of believers. When we get together as a group, we are committed to using what is called Acappella singing (voices only) and prayer to express praise in our worship. Each week we celebrate the Lord’s Supper to affirm our covenant relationship with God. We are also committed to using methods and worship formats that will glorify God and draw the hearts of the worshipers into the presence of God as well as encourage one another. We desire worship that is Christ-centered, community-building, and Spirit-led, engaging us in life-changing encounters with God. Worship refocuses our lives and drives all the ministries through which we endeavor to honor God and serve others.

About Eternity

God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (I John 5:11-12) People were created in the image of God to exist forever. We will live forever either separated from God by sin or eternally with God through his grace, forgiveness and salvation. Heaven and Hell are real and eternal. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be in God’s presence for eternity is Heaven.  Knowing these realities, we desire to use every available resource to draw people to God and the blessing of eternal life. The Bible exists to draw all of us, to God.  There is an eternal reward for those who seek the Lord, and there are many blessings to those who follow His teachings. The Apostle Paul said in Romans

15:5-7: “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.”
